Sedation Dentistry

Are you a super nervous patient who hates going to the dentist? You know it’s been years since you have visited a dentist and even though deep down in your heart you know you should but your mind keeps telling you don’t go. It’s a scary place! Well we can tell you, you are not alone in this. We have seen many fearful and anxious patients like yourself and after visiting Pure NZ Dental, they are no longer afraid or as fearful as before. They don’t avoid going to the dentist anymore and they know we have ways to calm their nerves.

Your visit to Pure NZ Dental will be safe, relaxed, painless and comfortable. Sedation dentistry is the answer to all your concerns.

We offer 3 options:

  • Oral Sedation – Meds prescribed prior to treatment to alleviate anxiety and help patients relax
  • Happy Gas or Nitrous Oxide – This gas offers a nice, happy and comfortable feeling that makes you feel very relaxed and at ease. Apparently some patients describe it like having too much to drink and feeling very happy go lucky during the entire dental treatment.
  • IV Sedation – This is a deeper conscious sedation reserved for patients who want little or no memory of their dental visits. We will arrange for a visiting anaesthetist to come to our dental clinic to administer the IV Sedation safely in our practice.

Basically all of these sedation dentistry provide one main GOAL:

To get you to come get your dental treatment done without any fear, anxiety or discomfort.

Only you and our dentist can decide if sedation is right for you. If you have a fear for the dentist that’s beyond your ability to control, then sedation dentistry may be a good option to get you to come visit us so that we can still look after your teeth for you. Your eligibility for sedation will depend on your age, health and any other medications you may be taking.

Oral sedation – Oral sedation is relatively simple and involves taking a prescribed medication about an hour prior to starting your dental treatment. You’ll feel more relaxed, yet completely aware of your surroundings during treatment.

Nitrous oxide – As you are seated in the chair, you’ll be instructed to inhale the gas before our dentist starts the dental procedure. Additional nitrous can be administered throughout your procedure to keep you in a state of euphoria. At the end of your treatment, once we stop the nitrous oxide, you will be back to normal and out of your sedated state.

IV Sedation – If IV sedation is right for you, you’ll be instructed to avoid foods and beverages altogether the night before your treatment. A sedative will be administered to you intravenously prior to your procedure, causing you to fall into a deeper conscious sedated state. Our visiting anaesthetist will monitor you throughout the procedure and adjust dosage as needed.

Please ensure that you do not drive after the appointment. Please bring a family member or a friend along. You may need to be supervised for several hours after the procedure.
