Root Canal Treatment

    Home Root Canal Treatment
    Root canal treatment

RCT is a dental procedure used to treat and preserve teeth with badly infected roots. The pulp is the live portion of the tooth that extends into the root and contains nerve ending and tissues. When our patients in Singapore come in with toothache and swelling, it’s usually because the tooth has become infected. Our dentists will examine and determine if the tooth is able to be saved and if it is, they would usually recommend an RCT.

Why do I need a RCT?

You need a RCT if you want to save your tooth. Quite often the problematic tooth will cause a toothache which is due to inflamed or infected nerve. Other common reasons are cracked tooth syndrome, trauma or dental decay.

    Is the treatment painful?

No. With effective local anesthetic delivery, the affected tooth will be completely numb which will make the entire process painless. Later on, once the numbness dissipates some minor discomfort can be present for a day or two. This pain is usually managed with painkillers.

    How many visits?

Usually 2 or sometimes 3 visits. In some unique cases, we could even perform the entire process in a single visit.

What type of post treatment care is required after RCT?

It is normal for teeth to become inflamed after a root canal, potentially causing sensitivity for the first several days following treatment. Our dentists may advise you to take some antibiotics to make sure all the bacteria will be eradicated. Normal brushing and flossing can be resumed immediately after treatment is completed.

What causes a RCT to fail?

Many reasons. The main reason is bacteria has found its way back into the canal system causing it to be re-infected. This could be that the initial treatment wasn’t completely successful in eradicating the bacteria. Other reasons are new dental decay or gum disease has affected the tooth. Fractures could also develop after the treatment is completed which is also another reason why RCT fails.

Must I crown the tooth after a RCT?

YES as it’s important to protect the structure of this weakened tooth. After all the main reason why you did RCT in the first place is to save the tooth instead of extracting it. So it’s important that you crown it so that it will be protected.
We always tell our patients, not getting a crown done after a RCT completion is equivalent to driving a car without brakes. The treated tooth will fracture without the crown’s protection. More often than not, when patient choose to do their dental crown more than 6 months after the RCT is completed, there are already signs of cracks/fractures on the tooth.
