Proper flossing does not create gaps, but improper flossing does.
Benefits of flossing: Flossing helps reduce the incidence of tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath and many more. This is because flossing daily helps remove food debris in areas where your toothbrush cannot reach. Hence, helping to prevent plaque formation.
How should I floss properly: Gentle motion, moving up and down along the sides of the tooth. Avoid pushing and pulling the floss. This can irritate the gums hence, creating potential pockets (“gaps”).
